One of the worst traits of church elders, what we in our tradition often call “associate” ministers, is associate ministers tend to ride coffins at funerals. So many associate ministers are so starved for attention, seeking the limelight, that a funeral or even a wake is a good opportunity for them to be seen and heard. The best and worst example of this is the associate minister who preaches his own father’s funeral. A minister preaching the funeral of immediate family is someone lost in self-absorption. In a world full of preachers, the only reason for an immediate family member to eulogize family is vanity It’s a big deal and a big opportunity, so they hop aboard the casket and ride. The best and worst example of this phenomena was, of course, Bernice King’s embarrassingly self-serving, long-winded, bloated, rambling “eulogy” of her mother, our great lady Coretta Scott King. After nearly six hours of tributes, the Reverend Bernice King still insisted on an hour of dull and uninspired blathering, with rarely a smile cracking her stony façade or a tear escaping her eye. This was her moment and she seized it, riding her late mother’s casket, leaving skid marks all across C-Span and major cable nets like MSNBC and CNN, who, like the rest of the planet, tuned her out.
